SOLUTIONS TO SUIT YOUR LIFESTYLE
Contact lenses have evolved significantly since we started out in 1986, and we have assisted patients in Swansea, Neath, Morriston, Swansea Valley, Pontardawe and Gower for over 25 years offering the latest eye care products. We make it our mission to keep up to date with leading technologies to ensure our patients have access to a solution that suits their requirements and budget.
At Bater & Stout Opticians, contact lenses are always fitted by experienced professionals, and are available for virtually any prescription strength and from all the major suppliers.
Worn directly on the front of the eye (the Cornea), our modern contact lenses give great vision with exceptional comfort, and in almost all cases are an excellent alternative to glasses.
Advantages of Contact Lenses:
-
Myopia control (prevention/ reduction in increasing short-sightedness -especially in younger patients)
-
Sport;
-
Leisure;
-
All day;
-
Cosmetic appearance
-
Freedom from spectacles and wider field of view;
-
No steaming up:
-
Special cases (such as Keratoconus, or after eye surgery).
It is essential that they are used with good care and appropriate guidance. Eye health is paramount, and we ensure you have the correct lenses, care, instruction and advice, to minimise the risk of eye problems.
This is important because
-
Unlike the rest of the body (which gets it’s oxygen from breathed-in air), the Cornea has no blood vessels and actually absorbs the oxygen it needs straight from the air; and
-
With contact lens wear there is a known slight increased risk of eye infection.
CONTACT LENS EXPLAINED
TAKING CARE
-
Has to allow a decent supply of air though the material it’s made from;
-
Needs to allow tears to flow under it’s surface to stop germs pooling under the lens;
-
Needs to have a good smooth surface to allow clear vision;
-
Needs to remain moist to stop the eye becoming dry;
-
Where appropriate, must been cleaned regularly and effectively to prevent germs multiplying, and to remove unwanted substances adhering to the lens surface (otherwise this increases the risk if infection or allergic reaction during contact lens wear).
Soft Contact Lenses
These are generally the most popular kind of contact lenses presently prescribed. These lenses are manufactured from incredibly soft and comfortable materials.
EYEDREAM contact lenses
These are astonishing and revolutionary - actually worn at only at night, they gently (but reversibly) reshape the front of the eye, enabling clear daytime vision without spectacles or contacts! These lenses actually slow down advancing Myopia (short-sightedness) in many patients. Bater & Stout Opticians are a specialist fitting centre for these contact lenses.
Gas-permeable lenses
These lenses are otherwise known as "RGPs." Generally smaller and tougher than soft contact lenses, these give excellent vision, are very durable and allow very high levels of oxygen to reach the cornea. They are cleaned daily and can last a year or more before needing replacement. Can take a little longer for the eye to get used to, as they can be felt more by the eye in the initial stages.
CONTACT LENSES TYPES
Many different kinds of contacts are available. The type of contact lens you use is dependent on your specific circumstances. Our professional and experienced Optometrists will recommend and fit the best lenses for your eyes and your lifestyle.
